Red Wing 2966 Engineer Boot Black Klondike

The Red Wing 2966 Engineer Boot strikes the perfect balance between accessible and investment-worthy footwear. Inspired by classic engineer boots from Red Wing’s early 20th-century archives, the 2966 retains the original silhouette and profile that made this style a favorite among motorcyclists, railroad workers, and craftsmen. It’s a boot built for protection, durability, and style, with a shape that has remained timeless for over a century.

Crafted from Red Wing’s renowned Black Klondike leather, the 2966 offers a unique patina journey. This double-tanned leather starts out as deep black, but with wear, the outer layer gradually reveals the warm brown core beneath, creating a personalized and well-worn character over time. The boots are finished with nickel buckles, a stacked leather heel, and a neoprene cord outsole — a combination that ensures lasting grip, resilience, and a refined look.

Almost completely hand-made.

THE ENGINEER BOOT
First developed in the early 1900s for firemen working on steam locomotives, engineer boots provided a laceless design for quick removal in hazardous situations, while offering strong leather protection against heat and debris. Over time, the style was embraced by motorcyclists and laborers for its toughness and understated look. The 2966 continues that tradition, built with the same craftsmanship and attention to detail as the originals.

FIT INFORMATION
A new pair of Red Wing Heritage footwear should fit comfortably tight on the foot, with enough room to freely wiggle toes. We recommend trying on footwear in store to ensure proper fit.

NO. 8 LAST

The no. 8 last is used for many of Red Wing’s pull-on boots, providing a roomy fit in the forefoot while maintaining a secure heel hold.

NEOPRENE CORD
The Neoprene cord outsole emerged as a practical innovation in mid-century
work boots, offering flexibility, durability, and grip in various conditions.
Originally designed to meet the demands of industrial workers, the
combination of natural rubber and synthetic neoprene provided reliable all-
weather traction and long-lasting performance. Over time, it became favored
not only for its functionality but also for how it developed a worn-in character,
embodying Red Wing’s tradition of blending craftsmanship with utility.

ABOUT KLONDIKE LEATHER
Black Klondike leather is made from a brown core leather with a
double tanned black finish. This type of leather ages to a beautiful
patina with every wear. The black paint will gradually wear off to
reveal the brown color underneath, creating a great vintage look.
