Sun Surf ‘Oriental Border’ Rayon Hawaiian Shirt – Black (SS39629-119)
The late 1950s saw a growing fascination with Asian art, design, and craftsmanship throughout the United States, and few garments capture this cultural moment more elegantly than Oriental Border. Reproduced by Sun Surf from an original Marlboro Sportswear design, this remarkable shirt combines traditional Japanese symbolism with the relaxed spirit of Hawaiian clothing.
At the centre of the design is the graceful crane, one of Japan's most enduring symbols. Associated with longevity, prosperity, loyalty, and good fortune, the bird appears in a dynamic circular composition reminiscent of traditional family crests and decorative textile motifs. Framing the design are ornamental vertical borders that create a striking sense of balance while reinforcing the shirt's distinctly Japanese character.
The artwork is reproduced using traditional discharge printing, a painstaking process in which colour is removed from the fabric rather than applied to it. This technique creates exceptionally crisp details while preserving the smooth, lightweight texture of the rayon fabric. Crafted from lustrous filament rayon, the shirt offers excellent breathability, an elegant drape, and exceptional comfort in warm weather.
Pattern matching across the chest pocket requires considerable skill and additional material, reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship that has made Sun Surf one of the world's leading authorities on vintage Hawaiian shirts.
A beautiful example of the oriental design movement that influenced the golden age of aloha shirts and an enduring piece of wearable art.
