The U.S. Army adopted herringbone twill for combat purposes and anti-gas protection. Trousers and Herringbone Twill have undergone several minor changes. The first pattern was a chino trouser type, but the appearance changed significantly from the second pattern, and large flap pockets with gussets were installed on both sides. The label is marked "SPECIAL" because there is a large gas flap behind the fly. Intended to prevent toxic gases from entering.
