‘Ishikawadai’ refers to the Japanese-made ring spinning machine manufactured by Ishikawa Seisakusho Co., Ltd. in 1953, which is the oldest of its kind still in operation today. As the manufacturer has no records of it, it is believed to be the oldest ring spinning machine currently in operation in Japan.

Even when compared to the latest ring spinning machines, its speed is only about one-third as fast, and as it can only spin at a slow pace, productivity is not high. However, as it places less strain on the cotton, it brings out the fabric’s inherent soft texture, creating a natural variation the unique natural character of cotton— a mottled texture reminiscent of hand-spun yarn.

The cotton used is commonly known as ‘Deep South Cotton’, harvested in the Lower Rio Grande Valley—the southernmost tip of Texas, bordering Mexico. Grown vigorously on American soil, this cotton is highly mature, with each individual fibre possessing a substantial thickness and offering firmness and resilience. It is the ideal material for achieving a rough, dry texture.

The indigo dyeing of the warp threads is carried out in such a way as not to compromise the unique texture of this cotton; the usual yarn refining process is omitted, and care is taken to create uneven indigo colouring, just like vintage denim of that era. To recreate the denim of 1953, we have deliberately carried out the entire production process using low-tech methods.
