Viberg is not just another brand vying for a share of the market. Viberg is first and foremost a family business, built on the pride and prowess of its founder Edwin Viberg. In 1914, Edwin Viberg moved from Sweden to a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada. As he grew up on that farm he became more and more interested in leatherwork and the timeless goods you can make with it. Fast-forward to 1931, Viberg opened up his first leather goods shop in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan. Since then, the tradition of making hand-made leather boots of exceptional quality has been passed down from generation to generation and continues to this day. The boots themselves take roughly 200 steps to complete and are undoubtedly a labor of love from a brand so dedicated to preserving old-world craftsmanship.
The Viberg 2030 Service Boot relies heavily on human experience and skilled human hands for its construction. These boots are crafted in every sense, and when you pick them up and hold them, you can immediately see how and why. The boot is made on a unique 2030 last, forming the base shape and design, but is fitted with fine details throughout. The Horween Natural Dublin leather has this incredibly rugged yet elegant feel to it, and the brass eyelets and speed hooks hit that perfect contrast of clean metal on rugged leather. The color is somewhere between tan and a deep shade of camel, which is really useful with denim and has a nice texture contrast to it. The 2030 is known for its well-constructed toe cap, complete with pinking and brogue holes to give it just that extra bit of detail. The double-stitching around the welt uses a contrasting thread color, which adds a well-designed effect. They're on Dainite soles (British made), which take some breaking-in, but are a great choice for work boots that demand indestructibility. In terms of quality, the proof is in the superior details of the boot itself. But where this boot really shines is in the story behind those great details.
Compared to a lot of other work boots out there today, the Viberg 2030 is made on a relatively slim shoe last. The 2030 last, which owner Brett Viberg (grandson of the Viberg founder) created in 2010 while redefining the styles Viberg offered, is often compared to more of a dress shoe silhouette. Viberg boots have always been made with a slightly slimmer waist in order to give greater support to the foot’s arch over hours and hours of hard wear. The combination of this with the new slim last created a Service Boot that was much easier to wear outside work environments. The result still looks very different from anything else, and offers greater versatility in styling. The toe box is still wider and higher, and has a stitch-down construction which you would never get with a conventional dress shoe. And the gorgeous Dublin leather of course starts off looking lush and oily and only gets more so, fading, creasing, and getting more beautiful all the while. As an option to wear outdoors, with the kind of chinos and sweatshirts sold by The Real McCoy’s and many others, it’s perfect. They’re boots that are elegantly well made, but ones you can camp in, climb in, and use for pretty much any kind of outdoor activity. These boots contain an industrial DNA that truly puts them in a different class and they deserve to be worn hard and enjoyed thoroughly.
